Mezuzah Check
Have your Mezuzot been checked recently?
Cracked, faded, or damaged letters may result in the scroll no longer being "kosher" and/or fit for use. It is customary to take down all Mezuzot in a home and have them checked by a sofer (scribe) from time-to-time, or when one's life has been negatively affected in the home (e.g., by accident or other event or circumstance).
According to Jewish tradition, when properly placed on all required doorways, the sacred works on the scrolls of Mezuzot provide protection for a home. Thus, if something goes wrong in a home, the Mezuzot should be checked to determine if they have become damaged.

KAPPAROTHelp Provide for Families and Give to the Needy Before Yom Kippur
It is customary to perform the ritual of "Kapparah” every year, in preparation for Yom Kippur. This ritual is an important and symbolical practice of atonement -- which traditionally involves swinging a chicken around one's head, (while reciting a special text) and then slaughtering the chicken.
In contemporary times, however, this custom is typically performed only through the giving of charity which has been specifically designated for this purpose, as our Sages teach that, ‘Repentance, Prayer, and Charity nullify all bad decrees.’ In preparation for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, we strive to increase our commitment to these three fundamental Mitzvot, so that we may be found worthy on the Day of Judgement. Your donation to Ohev Israel, in the suggested amount of $18.00 (eighteen being the sum of the numerical value of the Hebrew letters which spell "Chai," the Hebrew word for "life"), will be distributed directly to poverty-stricken individuals and families in Israel as well as toward enriching and uplifting the lives of our community members through outreach and education. |
